A Total Eclipse of the Sun will occur in Tokara chain of islands (Toshima Village) , southern part of Tanegashima, Yakushima, Kikai-Jima, northern part of Amami-Oshima in Japan on July 22, 2009.  The next total solar eclipse in Japan is seen in 26 years after 2035, the same region in total solar eclipse will be seen once in 300 years.

Basic Policies for the 2009 Total Solar Eclipse Event

1.Ensure the safety of both local citizens and visitors to the island

Measures will be taken to ensure everyone’s safety so that the eclipse can be enjoyed safely


2.Guarantee that the daily lives of local citizens are not disturbed by the event

There are many people who quietly lead lives within the area that will experience the total eclipse. It is necessary to ensure that their lives will not be disrupted by anything related to this event, including the time period before and after.


3.Promote Amami’s abundant nature, its rare, local wildlife, and plant life.

Amami is striving to become a World Natural Heritage Site, so the rich and diverse natural environment and ecosystem will be heavily promoted and publicized.


4.Clearly state the responsibility of event participants

During this event, all participants will be financially responsible for themselves.


5.Promote Amami’s rich culture

In conjunction with the Total Solar Eclipse event, Amami’s unique history, culture, and the warm, welcoming nature of the Amami people will be promoted to both Japanese and foreign visitors.


It is predicted that 6,800 people will visit Amami Oshima in order to view the Total Solar Eclipse. 5000 people will stay in Amami City and the remaining 1800 will stay in other parts of Amami Oshima.

This prediction of 6,800 visitors was made after taking into account the number of places available to house people during the event.

The first priority of this event is to ensure the safety of the local citizens and the 6800 visitors.
